Complex Questions

The four types of complex questions are evaluation, weaken/strengthen, analogy, and application.

Evaluation questions require test takers to compare or analyze information from the passage. The language used to indicate this type of question varies a lot but an example of this type of question is Which of the following most accurately summarizes the relationship between nineteenth-century American women and eighteenth- century American women in the highlighted text? Note here that in print materials, text will not be highlighted. Instead, line reference numbers will be given. But on the actual, computer based test the portions of a question like this will be highlighted. Evaluation questions are one of the least common types of reading questions.

More common than evaluation questions, weaken/strengthen questions ask the test taker to weaken or strengthen some claim in the passage. Often, the test taker must consider possible scenarios that could affect the outcome of the claim. Be on the lookout for wrong answers that accomplish the opposite task. For example, answers that weaken are common on strengthen questions. These questions are identified by the presence of the words weaken or strengthen.

Analogy questions use the answer choices to draw comparisons to information discussed in the passage. The correct answer is the one that has the same characteristics as the information referenced in the passage. Mostly, these questions can be identified by the key phrase most similar.

Sometimes questions will ask you to apply information from the passage to a new scenario. These are application questions and can be easily spotted when the question stem refers to the answer choices as scenarios, situations, or assertions.
